Snuggling up with Baxter is the best! Except for when his breath smells like a skunk that raided the trash can! 🤢
If you are also a dog parent, you know this all too well.
Bad breath in dogs isn't always just an inconvenience to you but also might be a sign of a more serious health problem, so always make sure to check with your Vet to see if there's an underlying issue.
The good news is that Bad Breath in Dogs is completely preventable via natural remedies. Try the following tips that worked wonders with our Baxter.
1. BRUSH YOUR DOG's TEETH EVERY DAY.
Over 80% of dogs have oral problems by the age of 3 and dogs are 5x more prone to gum disease than humans. So it's vital to care for those teeth!
Baxter wasn't a huge fan of someone sticking a toothbrush in his mouth and moving it around for a couple of minutes. So we ended up getting him this toothbrush that he thinks is a toy, sometimes we'll coat it with a little bit Dog Toothpaste but often times he's perfectly happy to gnaw on it and play with it sans the paste.
Tip on brushing your dogs teeth daily: We don't leave out the toothbrush, we only give it to him a few minutes at night so he thinks it's a treat and not something that he gets bored of because he has constant access to it.
Benefits of daily brushing:
- prevent plague build up.
- prevent majority of gum diseases in dogs.
- a much better smelling dog breath.
2. VISIT THE VET PERIODICALLY
We take Baxter for an Oral Check twice a year, just to make sure we are not missing anything as far as his oral hygiene goes.
3. GIVE YOUR DOG A CHALLENGING CHEW TOY
Baxter tends to get in a lot of trouble when he is bored so we make sure to leave couple of chew toys around when he's home alone. This one here is his absolute favorite. Not only does it help keep Baxter entertained, this chew toy also helps clean his teeth on a regular basis. We switch up the treat that we put in the toy, but we always put dry treats, that way it really helps clean Baxter's Teeth.
4. PARSLEY IS NOT JUST YOUR BEST FRIEND
Good Ol' Parsley carries antibacterial agents that act as natural breath fresheners. So sprinkle some chopped parsley on your Dog's food. You can thank us later! 😊
5. CATCH THE COCONUT OIL TREND, BAXTER!
But it's a trend for a reason. Coconut oil does wonders for Dogs. Not only does coconut oil help dogs breath smell better, it also helps their digestion, gives them energy boost, improves their coat and skin. How much coconut oil you can give your dog depends on his size but for our Goldenretriever Baxter, we give him about half a tablespoon twice a day.
